The minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has presented provisional licenses to 20 newly approved private universities by the National Universities Commission. This are now part of institutions IJMB aspirants can also consider while choosing their institution of choice.
Below is the list of the 20 new private universities granted provisional licenses to operate in Nigeria:
- Topfaith University, Mkpatak, Akwa Ibom state
- Thomas Adewumi University, Oko-Irese, Kwara state
- Maranathan University, Mgbidi, Imo state
- Ave Maria University, Piyanko, Nasarawa state
- Al-Istiqama University, Sumaila, Kano state
- Mudiame University, Irrua, Edo state
- Havilla University, Nde-Ikom, Cross River state
- Claretian University of Nigeria, Nekede, Imo state
- NOK University, Kachia, Kaduna state
- Karl-Kumm University, Vom, Plateau state
- James Hope University, Lagos, Lagos state
- Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano, Kano state
- Capital City University, Kano, Kano state
- Ahman Pategi University, Pategi, Kwara state
- University of Offa, Offa, Kwara state
- Mewar University, Masaka, Nasarawa state
- Edusoko University, Bida, Niger state
- Philomath University, Kuje, Abuja
- Khadija University, Majia, Jigawa state
- Anan University, Kwall, Plateau state
With this approval, Nigeria now has a total of 192 universities; 99 private universities, 44 federal universities and 49 state universities, according to the National University Commission website.
The minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, Adamu, stated in a presentation that the current number of universities in Nigeria is too small given the country’s growing population which presently stood at over 200 million
It was also reported by The Punch that he said Brazil (209 million population) has 441 universities, Mexico (126 million people) has 375 universities while Russia (145 million people) has 741 universities.
